I had a similar problem with a pci modem a few years ago. I eventually bought
an external, serial modem from Dabs so I was sure it would work. They still
sell the same modem and I am in the process of ordering one for a guy who
wants to try Linux but also has a useless pci modem. Its quite cheap - about
Euro 30 if I remember right.
