  | I get the feeling, I've put words into your mouth a little bit here, my
  | mistake.

 thanks for the apology.

  | The fact that you said, that you had used ATMs in France, but,
  | considered on-line banking to be insecure, prompted me to state that...

 uh, NO, here we go again! ;-(
 what I said was some bank _branches_ in the South of France
 use "airlock" doors, presumably similar to those which can
 apparently now can be found in some parts of Ireland;
  and I suggested in an off-hand comment that a solution to
 what started this thread is to not use on-line banking;
  and that I really really disliked on-line shopping (a point
 which may have gotten lost?);
  but that I had done on-line transactions nevertheless.

 at no time did I mention ATMs; or why I don't like on-line
 shopping; nor have I ever said on-line banking is insecure,
 but it is obvious (from, e.g., agreeing with the ghist of
 Colm's posting) that I do have problems with it.

  |[ ... ]
  | Out of curiousity though... why don't do on-line banking or web
  | shopping? Is there, some security flaw, in the on-line banking process,
  | that makes it, /less/ reliable then... an ATM ?

 fair question! but, as I have also said, I will not
 answer in an ILUG post since it has nothing to due
 with Linux (AFAIK). I don't mean to sound rude here,
 but I am concerned about being misquoted again, so I
 _also_ will not reply to, e.g., private e-mail.

  | Disclaimer:
  |  I don't do on-line banking, but I plan to and yes [ ... ]

 I do have on-line banking access, albeit not with an
 Irish bank, which I used once, from Linux (Firefox).
 it "worked" in the sense the very trivial transaction
 happened. I consider it a backup of last resort.

 ( the bank in question happens to have extremely good
  telephone service. the obvious security precautions
  seem sound — albeit I did have a two-way correspondence
  with some of the technical stuff over a potential
  hole (an attack using telephone call loggers). )

 and yes I do use ATMs, as well as in-branch banking
 (with is always amusing when my Français meets the
 clerk's Anglais!), credit cards, and other options.
 I never _had_ a problem (albeit I have had credit
 cards stolen more than once), except for that caused
 by critical snail-mail going missing or being severely
 delayed. in no cause would e-mail/on-line have helped.

cheers!
