can I suggest you read Paul Dunne's excellent Reading List for the Linux Newbie
http://www.linux.ie/newusers/readinglist/introduction.php
and recommend our own Beginners Linux Guide: http://www.linux.ie/blg/

RUTE ( http://rute.2038bug.com/index.html.gz )is quite good too.

It may help make things more clear :)
