For an external modem - that suprises me ... odds are it was either
line-noise or a poor initialisation string:
Try this one - usually works with hayes-compatible modems (nonUSR):
AT&F&C1&D2&K3&Q5W1V1Q0X4\N3W2
If that doesn't work : try removing the &K3&Q5 part, the \N3 next and
the W2 if push comes to shove
The rest should work :)
