[ILUG] Locale fun and games.

[ILUG] Locale fun and games.

When trying to put a £ symbol in a file on a remote RHEL3 machine, I
constantly get a £ symbol preceded by a capital A with a little hat on it.
As far as I can make out, the locale setting on the RHEL3 box are OK, it
just doesn't seem to like me.

Has anyone here had a similar problem, and if so, how was it resolved?

Google doesn't seem to be throwing up any relevent information for me.

output from locale:
LANG=en_IE.UTF-8
LC_CTYPE="en_IE.UTF-8"
LC_NUMERIC="en_IE.UTF-8"
LC_TIME="en_IE.UTF-8"
LC_COLLATE="en_IE.UTF-8"
LC_MONETARY="en_IE.UTF-8"
LC_MESSAGES="en_IE.UTF-8"
LC_PAPER="en_IE.UTF-8"
LC_NAME="en_IE.UTF-8"
LC_ADDRESS="en_IE.UTF-8"
LC_TELEPHONE="en_IE.UTF-8"
LC_MEASUREMENT="en_IE.UTF-8"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_IE.UTF-8"
