Personally I would be against this idea, since it would effectively
create a two-tier list.
Those in the lower tier might feel that they can be ignored by the
"Upper class" members and they might go else where.
As others have pointed out, the list maintainer is doing a very
effective job of spam control. I am on some (ok, non-Linux list) which
are closed and member only, and get more spam from them than from this
list.
This single thread has generated more emails than all the spam of the
past year, and this is only one of the threads on the subject.
