what `expr' is being assumed? no `expr' I know of,
including GNUs, knows anything about FP. what is
really happening is the `expr' line in question is
actually doing a string (lexicographic) comparison.
$ expr --version
expr (GNU coreutils) 5.2.1 [ ... ]
$ expr 1.2 + 3.4
expr: non-numeric argument
$ expr 1.2 == 1.2
1
$ expr 1.2 == 1.20
0
