[ILUG] Oracle 11i and VM & elvtune recomendations.

[ILUG] Oracle 11i and VM & elvtune recomendations.

I am sorry for the late response. I left this message on my drafts
folder by mistake.

Using /sbin/elvtune for tuning the I/O can be useful for OLAP databases
but for OLTP, it is good to leave at the defaults.

I am assuming the following 11i (11.5.10) configuration:
JDK 1.4.2
Jinitiator 1.3.1.1.8
Database 9.2.0.5
iAS 1.0.2.2.2
Forms 6.0.8.24
OJSP 1.1.3
RSF 8.0.6.3
JDBC 9.0.2.5
Discoverer 4.1.4.8

RH EL 3.0 Update 3 or 4

If the Apache JServ log or the browser report an "Out Of Memory"
condition, the cause is most likely to be that the JVM ran out of
memory. This normally happens when data handled by the JVM exceeds its
memory allocation pool.
Please refer to Metalink note 169640.1.

If the system has been upgraded from previous releases notes 130091.1
and 282170.1 may help to reduce the troubleshooting efforts.

There was a known issue affecting RH AS 2.1 only - RedHat Bugzilla
#66418. More details can be found in Metalink note 225301.1

I hope it helps.

Hey all,

Anyone got any good recomendations for VM tuning with oracle 11i?
I have plenty for 8i and 9i but not for 11i. A good link would be sweet.
I have this guy who is complaining that his 8gig Oracle RHEL3 box is not
swapping!

But he has swap activated. Sure I could make it swap, but why would you
want to? Surely the system will eventually need to swap and go ahead and
do it?
I do not see any errors in the system, so i reckon leave well alone non?

He also has an I/O wait which is a tad high.
It goes from 42% to 72%. So I was thinking of changing the values in
elvtune.

The default settings are for compatibility more than performance, so I was
thinking of changing them as follows:

# elvtune -r 2048 -w 4096 /dev/xxx
Its in a SAN though, any recomendations lads?

regards
Conor.
