[ILUG] Suggestions for best 64 bit Linux distro?

Who says you'd be best off compiling all your own software?

Why is customisation "all the more important" for 64-bit architecture?

Ubuntu AMD64 is already optimized for x86-64, and you don't have to
waste eons compiling stuff. Even my (fairly minimal) server install
has over 600 packages installed; compiling each of those from source
isn't something I should be spending my server's time on.

Bloody riceboys.
