I imagine any 2.6.9 distributed by Fedora would be heavily patched
(though I haven't checked, I do know RHEL4's "2.6.9", for example, is
mutated by many backported patches.) - if the one of
those patches was a bugfix necessary for your system to boot, well,
you'd need it,
one other thing that novices sometimes forget in manual
kernel compiles is to make an initial ram disk (initrd)
if necessary (you use mkinitrd for that, see "man mkinitrd" )
