I guess I could drop back to ide-scsi and see if that makes any difference.
A few search results included Jorg Schilling saying:

I wouldn't regard verbatim as low quality and I used not to have this
problem with this drive.  I guess it's possible they're just a bad batch of
cds.  Will see if my brother has problems with these disks on his Mac.
