Something about this sort of rang true, that the drive might have
deteriorated. The media seemed fine (tested on Mac), the drive used to
work and cdrecord is generally (IME) pretty reliable. The machine is also
kept in an unfortunately dusty environment. So, I ran round to Marx and
picked up a new cdrw/dvdrom drive and it worked first time. I'm not sure
but I suspect it'll probably continue to.
I tried opening up the other which was rather awkward so I'll get back to
it now that I have a running machine. Thanks to all for the help.
