Dara,

If your distro has a recent version of X then it should be enough to use
"setxkbmap ie" to get a keyboard which is a superset of the Windows
Irish layout. If you want dots then use "setxkbmap ie CloGaelach": AltGr
should then give you áéíóú and dot over the consonants, assuming you've
got the fonts for it. I use Gentoo and it works fine.

Fonts: look for Vincent Morley's on www.fainne.org/gaelchlo -- free and
Unicode encoded! If you need commercial quality look at Michael
Everson's at www.evertype.com. There are some others around too but I
don't think they are Unicode-encoded, making them pretty useless until
someone re-encodes them.

I'm planning an update to the ie keyboard map over the summer, which
will include a web page explaining how to use it! If anyone has comments
on it I'd be delighted to hear from you. I'm also hoping to do a Windows
version of it (has anyone had a look at the new Irish Windows to see if
they've included a better layout with it?).

contributor to Firefox translation)
