I use the following to start Tomcat (my paths of course):
su - tomcat -c "export JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/jdk1.5.0_01 ; export
CATALINA_HOME=/www/tomcat ; export PATH=$PATH:
$JAVA_HOME/bin ; /www/tomcat/bin/catalina.sh start"
What you really need to check are the error logs. You'll find them
under:
$CATALINA_HOME/logs
