FWIW:

- Sun provide RPMs IIRC (not sure for what distros)

- Dag Wieers Apt/yum repository provides rpms for at least j2re for
   FC, easily apt-get install'able

- There are other java runtimes and devel environments
   (Java as an open specification != implementation and all that..)
