Thanks to everyone on the list who offered advice on this. FYI the Linux
Rescue didn't work so I had to reinstall FC3 from scratch. I chose to
put GRUB on the MBR.
When I rebooted, the machine went straight into Linux - Grub didn't show
up at all.
A cursory look at grub.conf showed a "hiddenmenu" command. I commented
out this and GRUB duly appeared at the next boot.

For the moment I'm stuck with 800x600 resolution. No doubt the refresh
rate FC picked upon install is not quite right.
Another thing I could do with is the battery status icon thingy on the
task bar in windows.

I quite like FC3 once I got used to the Task bar along the top of the
screen. Has RH borrowed this from the Mac?
