I had the same problem but with amarok and kde on FC3. I had to install the
amarok-arts package before I could get any sound.
I'm not sure if gnome uses arts as its sound engine, so there may be a
similar package you need to install for gnome. Do a "yum list available
amarok*" and see how you go.
