  | 1. There is a "System Log" page, the content of which looks rather like
  | /var/log/syslog on a linux machine with pppd running.
  |
  | 2. When the machine is replugged the time goes back to 01/01/1970 00:00.
  |
  | Both of these suggest to me that it's running some description of unix or
  | linux. [ ... ]

every non-*ix-based embedded O/S I've used uses The
*ix Epoch, so point 2 means fsck all.

many of those O/Ses also have a syslog(-ish) scheme
of varying complexity/similarity to the *ix schemes.
so the existence of one (point 1) also means fsck all.
however the _contents_ of the message(s) may provide
reason for further _investigation_, but I cannot see
the log(s?) providing convincing proof — just some
 collaborating evidence.

as an aside, one reason the embedded O/Ses I've used
use *ix Epoch and a syslog(-ish)-like facility is
because the host development system _is_ *ix — hence
using various *ix-ish conventions are less hassle to
deal with. indeed, you'll find a surprising amount
of POSIX.1(-ish)-like stuff in modern embedded O/Ses.

cheers!
