The /etc/redhat-release content is different too. :-)

That was enough to break [an obviously incredibly brittle...] installer
that was substring matching on the content of that file in my tests of 
CentOS.

Changing /etc/redhat-release (don't have the exact string to hand, you 
get the idea)  to "Redhat  (compatible; CentOS 4)"
in the manner of workaround browser ID strings of course fixed that, but 
I'm embarrassed to admit it took several minutes of head scratching to 
work out what was wrong.
