It sounds very similar to a problem I dealt with before.
 
As someone else mentioned, boot into single user mode first 
of all so you have root access.

Then run "redhat-config-authentication" and make sure that 
the only authentication methods
are "Use MD5 Passwords" and "Use Shadow Passwords".

You can also edit the /etc/sysconfig/authconfig file manually 
to specify this rather than going
through the config tool if it is not installed.
