yep.  1: I have a couple of non-techie mates here who are, indeed, using
linux on their desktop -- out of choice! -- and they love it.  Really.

2: my desktop != your desktop != some dude in a call-centre's desktop !=
the cio-today journalist's desktop, as fuzzix said.

3: The last time I used MacOS X, apps started hanging and had to be killed
from a Terminal.   I was left wondering if *it* was Ready For The
Desktop. ;)
