The problem may be that your programs are trying to access the soundcard
directly, and there are too few channels available (as Conor says).
You should be able to fix this by installing a software mixer (Arts,
for example), and running the programs through that. You may need to
recompile your media programs to take advantage of it, but if they're
installed with RPMs, it may be just a matter of changing the .conf files.
