Well you have to install to $HOME/.kde/ - Kicker searches only
particular directories (KDEDIRs) for applet description files. In your
particular case it will need to find ko2smsapplet.desktop in
~/.kde/share/apps/kicker/applets, ko2smsapplet.png in
~/.kde/share/apps/kicker/pics and libko2smsapplet.so (and
libko2smsapplet.la) in ~/.kde/lib.
Have you got qt-devel and kdelibs-devel installed (I know - no root
access but you can at least check with something like: rpm -q -a | grep
kdelibs)? If they are then send me the full output of configure
including the full command used offlist (so as not to clutter ILUG with
a two-way conversation - if we solve the problem we can post the
solution).
By the by - the about use of prefix (--prefix=/home/user/.kde/) does
work in general and I have tested it for ko2smsapplet.
