I've been using this for about two years now, and I'd recommend it. I
know that ideally you shouldn't run a webserver/mailserver/etc on the
same box as a firewall, but as in your friend's case, I can only have
just one machine to  do these jobs for me.
My instance of CC 3.0 acts as my firewall, Apache is my webserver,
postfix/SpamAssassin/Dovecot IMAP for my mail, fileserver (Samba) for
the windows laptop. It has a nice web-based interface for nearly all
configuration which makes things easy for inexperienced users.
Updates/patches are frequent and there's a decent community forum for help.
