My Canon EOS 300D works great with the Kamera subsystem (Digikam is
nice). The fact the camera can plug directly into the Canon IP4000 was
one of final straws in the decision-making.

...and the fact that it had both parallel and USB, I knew whatever
happened I would get something out of it. I didn't really expect the USB
to work and plugged it in for a lark, expecting to have to use the
parallel port. Nice surprise!
