My advice: stop right there, and instead install Kubuntu, the KDE
version of Ubuntu. It is the very best distribution I have experienced
for Desktop/Laptop use (and believe me, I have tried them all!). It has
all the virtues of Debian, but is up to date and focused on the desktop.
