You're so wrong.
Back in the day we had:
- proof of concept Matrox MGA2016W driver (did gouraud shading that
kind of thing)
which led to:
- Matrox MGA-G{1,2}00 driver, Utah-GLX (John Carmack hacked on this)
which led to:
- DRI and ATi Radeon, Matrox G200, drivers
all open-source.
