Is this configuration part of the kernel? When I boot the 2.6.7 kernel I mount
the same directories on the same points. Lilo boots OK but it fails at
mounting root so the problem must be kernel related.
I am using devfs

It might be to do with device nodes. e.g. using devfs or udev, but
not having things set up correctly for that. It's a while since I had
to change these things, but I'm pretty sure I once got a VFS error
like the above due to a mistake with devfs/udev configuration.
