Thanks to all the replies. My first venture onto the boards was not as
terrifying as I expected.
putting alias net-pf-10 off
in /etc/modules.conf had no effect but putting it into
/etc/modprobe.conf seems to have solved the problem for now. I will now
scurry to the net and books and try and find out more about what these
commands mean and about this strange beast called linux.
