[ILUG] Whatever happened to real computer scientists?

[ILUG] Whatever happened to real computer scientists?

This thread reminds me of my father's favourite pastime years and years
ago fixing valve tellys and radios. Many happy hours were spent
plundering Smithfield market in Belfast for various mullard valves ( a
point each if anyone can remember any other makes or their model
numbers) and getting values tested and so on. I can also rembmer him
and my uncle spending their weekends coaxing all sorts of car and boat
engines back into life.

Isnt the reality that we now live in a disposable era which I suppose is
combined with "no user servicable parts inside".

I would guess that the majority of people on this list would know what
the function of a network or video card is but how many could say how
it does it or the combination of components required to make them do
their stuff. I again am guessing that in the early days of gadetry they
were relatively simple, not common and thus spares were not in plentiful
supply either so if something did bust it either had to be fixed or made.

Of course drawing on someone elses comment if the thing is reparied and
returned and then blows up in your face we are highly likely to sue the
reparier for damages!!!

Progress Progress!

Regards

David
