Yes, you can.
It sounds to me (you should give the exact error message)
as though you may have two partitions with the same label.
If that is so you can either change one of the labels with e2label,
or you can alter /etc/grub.conf (and maybe /etc/fstab)
to use eg "root=/dev/hda3" instead of labels.
If you want more advice, post your /etc/grub.conf and /etc/fstab .
