 this sounds like yer not using the RockRidge extensions?!

 specify either the `-r' or `-R' option to mkisofs(1) to enable.
 I have never had a problem — and I have very deep directories
 and extremely unusual filenames — with RockRidge (I use `-R').

 RockRidge has existed almost as long as Tahoe (the original
 name for ISO-9660) has existed.  IIRC, the Unix community was
 refusing to ratify the 9660 standard since Tahoe has the sort
 of problems you cite.  so RockRidge was proposed/included as
 essentially an “add-on”, mostly for Unix (including Linux).
 since RockRidge _is_ (a form of) ISO-9660, RockRidge CDs/DVDs
 can be read without problem on Windross &tc that prefer Tahoe
 or whatever.  (however, creating a RockRidge on a Tahoe-biased
 system can be a problem.)
