Thanks for the comments about Rock Ridge. Actually, I've tried this before without much success.
In any case, I gave it a quick go with two different source directories. I got an errors both times:
1. An error about illegal charaters in a filename
2. An error about name collisions that specifically refered to rock ridge
Unfortunately, I didn't take a note of the particular errors as I was in a rush, so it's possible I'm
doing something stupid (it's been known). As I have a workable solution using the ext3 approach,
I'm not appealing for help here. I just thought I'd log the problems I encountered. I'll try to work
out what's happening next time I'm creating backups.
