Or you could use svn externals feature e.g.
$ svn propedit svn:externals /
etc file:///root/svn/etc
boot file:///root/svn/boot
$ svn status /
X etc
Performing status on external item at 'etc'
X boot
Performing status on external item at 'etc'
No svn hacking involved :)
