Have no idea about the AMD64 thing(dont have one), but try just
booting the live cd in text mode, ATI graphics cards have always been
a bitch for me, so starting without x would get you to a running
system.
once you've got it installed you can then spend time fucking around with X.
The ubuntu installers text based anyway.
