I can't replicate this problem on Sarge/amd64.
A look at http://bugs.debian.org/joe, in particular 252934, indicates
that it has problems on ia64 systems due to lack of #includes. It seems
reasonable to assume that this problem also happens on amd64 - I know
I've found at least one such package (netris).
I haven't run into any problems with nano, so that might be a possible
alternative for an easy-to-use editor.
