Yes. Specifically, it means "live by default, with an option to then
use a new-ish bulk-copying GUI installer to put the thing on your hard
drive". The "Alternate CD" image, by contrast, boots into the old
ncurses installer borrowed from Debian. The latter installer is (very
likely) a good bit more flexible and robust, and can (unlike the Desktop
CD's installer) upgrade existing systems to Dapper Drake.
Good luck with your hard drive. (I downloaded both ISOs last week, in
their Xfce/Xubuntu flavour, for testing on my G3 iBook.)
