Worked a treat!

No amount of "footering" would allow me to go with the init3 command.  
Reading my book of many words came up with telinit but this only 
partially worked as it blanked the screen and left me with a flashing 
cursor which would not do anything - effectively machine locked 
requiring a forced reboot. In the end I edited intitab.

Where did I go wrong?   Linux = Fedora Core 5
