I only just saw this thread, and as I was reading the many
overly large suggestions, was wondering when someone would
suggest the obvious.
B.t.w., here's one of many sed(1) versions. AFAIK, this
works with any version of `sed':
sed -n -e 'H;/)$/{s/.*//;x;s/\n//gp;}'
