It turns out that the upgrade still failed. I ended up with an unbootable
machine which I attributed to selinux interfering with the upgrade. Redid
the restore from backup and tried again. This time, glibc failed with the
post-install script throwing an error about /sbin/ldconfig. After
multiple tries, including uninstalling selinux and booting with
selinux=disabled, I restored the backup and put the machine back into use
without the update. I might try your method next but, after that I'll
move it to CentOS 4...
