[ILUG] Linux & Adaptec 2820SA Raid Card

Hi Guys,

I can't afford a big expensive big brand warrantied filer, and with
the new seagate 750Gig drives out, I thought it might be feasable to
build one myself.

Looking at this card - Adaptec 2820SA
http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/products/sata/sata2raid/AAR-2820SA/
takes 8 drives... hmm... 8 x 750gig... hmm... a bunch of peltier
cooliers, and all those noisy desktop case fans I replaced... a little
bit of metal workshop and I'm laughing...

I'd like to use RAID 6, and the specs say that can be done with
Adaptec advanced data protection suite... and it goes on to say that
the card is linux compatible.

Does anyone here have experience of this card on linux, and do you
know if that advanced data protection suite is a hardware thing on the
card or some f'ing windows app gimmick?

TIA,

Aine.
