  |[... power supply fried and apparently took with it one of
  | the two 256MiB PC133 DIMM slots ... power was accidently
  | removed from CD and DVD rewriters ... BIOS failed to hold
  | settings for hdb ...]

it appears the accidental disconnection of the CD and DVD
was also the cause of the BIOS failing to keep the hdb
settings. I dunno why, BIOS bug, maybe? anyways, with
power restored to the two rewriters, the BIOS is happy.

so it seems the only damage is the one DIMM slot. this
means I have only the one slot remaining; i.e., I only
have 256MiB. ;-( I am noticing that! whilst I will
be looking to get a new machine eventually (mostly need
more CPU umphf), ATM I am thinking about upgrading to a
512MiB DIMM (which is the largest the machine/motherboard
 will support).

does anyone have recommendations on (European) suppliers
of PC133 512MiB DIMMs? good or bad? quality and service
 beats price.

cheers!
