Yes - check your networking. Is routing correct? (probably, because  
you can VNC to the box). Is name resolution setup correctly? From a  
shell, try dig www.linux.ie and check that you get back a line with

www.linux.ie.           86400   IN      CNAME   morrigan.tuatha.org.

Does Firefox have a proxy wrongly set?
