Are you using a built in modem on the laptop ?
If so send us the output of lspci and have a look at linmodems.org

Have you tried easyubuntu it installs all the codecs and apps needed to
play mp3 encrypted DVDs etc. without you having to learn which
package/library does what.
Of course you should change your default music format to Ogg/Vorbis ;)
