I just got the problem sorted. It seems like it was a font issue.
I done an apt-get install `apt-cache search chinese |grep ^ttf |awk '{print
$1}' ` on my test machine, and it worked fine after that.
Now all I have to do is double-check the various packages that installs and
put it live.
