Do you use a different partition or logical volume for /var ?
If you don't, apt-get can fail just because there is no free space
enough for saving a local copy of those .deb files in
/var/cache/apt/archives.
Run apt-get clean
and try again . Hopefully you will have enough free space now to to the upgrade
