Also, if I recall correctly, the syslog protocol looks something like
this:
- 1 byte: facility
- 1 byte: level
- null-terminated string: log message
(or something like that, going from memory). As a result low bytes
are common at the start of a syslog packet/message -- perhaps
some bugginess caused it to "shuffle along"?
