Are you sure your firewall only allows this ? If you set a proxy
setting for ftp/http, can rsync still connect to the host or is port
873 definitly blocked ?

I haven't tried this but there seems to be a client able to deal with
such constraints : http://zsync.moria.org.uk/paper/
