[ILUG] glibc error running apcupsd

[ILUG] glibc error running apcupsd

SuSE 9.0 SLES with Novell/apcupsd 3.10.17a-3

I've configured my other SuSE boxes with apcupsd with no problems. When I try to start apcupsd from /etc/init.d/ it just gives a failed message.
There are no log entries in /var/log/messages. When I run /usr/sbin/apcupsd:

/usr/sbin/apcupsd --debug
/usr/sbin/apcupsd: option `--debug' requires an argument
/usr/sbin/apcupsd: relocation error: /usr/sbin/apcupsd: symbol __printf_chk, version GLIBC_2.3.4 not defined in file libc.so.6 with link time reference

Is something broken here? Should I just try from source?

TIA
