Having messed around with one or two inventory systems I've settled on
OCS Inventory NG. It's got a client server style setup with the
machines automatically updating the database so no need to update it
by hand and so it's not going to go out of date. It supports Windows
and Linux and has unofficial support for Solaris (which I have
working) so it's got everything I need.
